The first step of any communication is acknowledgment. The handshake. If we receive an alien message they are essentially "pinging" and await a response.
If I met an alien in person I would say "hello" and wave, the first step. You have to be positive, assume the being are friendly. That's all you can really do. Reacting as though you know their intentions when you surely do not is most certainly a terrible mistake.
We're all children of the same universe.

Saying "Hello" is redundant, and might mean nothing to them. To say we come in peace is a lie, because our planet is not in peace with itself, therefore we do not come in peace. Straight to the point, we want their technology. We "can't" get to them, but they might be able to "touch" us.
